Tutorials

A guided path from a blank project to a fully-tracked manuscript, real screenshots included. Follow it start to finish, or skip straight to what you need.

1. Creating Your First Manuscript 2 min

From a blank welcome screen to your first paragraph. Create a project, add your first chapter, and watch your dashboard come to life.

2. Creating Characters and Locations 5 min

Build out your cast and world so their names autocomplete right in your scenes, then link relationships and see them connected on the Character Map.

3. Tracking Your Novel with Story Elements 4 min

Tag each scene as you write it, and Alistair builds your story arc timeline automatically. No extra outlining tool needed.

4. Writing and Formatting a Scene 3 min

A quick tour of the scene editor's toolbar: status, tags, version history, and the formatting tools you'll reach for daily.

5. Compiling to PDF, DOCX, or EPUB 3 min

Turn your scenes into one submission-ready manuscript, or a real e-book, in a single pass through the Compiler.

6. Setting Up Your Local LLM 5 min

Run the Setup Wizard to grab a model that fits your hardware. Everything runs offline, so nothing ever leaves your machine.

7. Writing a Screenplay in Alistair Screenplay 4 min

Real industry-standard formatting from the first line: scene headings, character cues, and exports to Fountain or Final Draft. It's a different project type from tutorials 1, 4, and 5, but Characters, Locations, and Story Elements (tutorials 2 and 3) work exactly the same way here.

8. Building a Daily Writing Habit 2 min

Set a daily word-count goal, then watch your streak and activity heatmap grow right from your project's home screen.
