First-Time Setup

Alistair ships unsigned on purpose. What Apple and Microsoft call a "developer certificate" is really a distribution license: pay them, and their gatekeeping systems stop flagging your software. It's a toll, not a safety check. Gatekeeping goes against our core values, so we don't participate in it. Your OS will flag Alistair once as a result; here's how to get past that screen.

Windows

  1. Run the downloaded installer. You'll see a blue "Windows protected your PC" screen. That's SmartScreen flagging an unsigned installer, not a sign that anything's wrong.
  2. Click More info, then Run anyway.
  3. Alistair installs normally from there. This screen typically only shows up on the installer itself, not on Alistair afterward.

Mac

  1. Open the DMG and drag Alistair into your Applications folder.
  2. Try opening it. If macOS says it's from an unidentified developer, right-click (Control-click) the app and choose Open, then confirm.
  3. If instead you see "Alistair is damaged and can't be opened," that's a known false alarm for unsigned Apple Silicon apps, not real damage. Open Terminal (search "Terminal" in Spotlight) and run: xattr -cr /Applications/Alistair.app

    Tip: type xattr -cr with a trailing space, then drag the Alistair icon from Finder straight into the Terminal window. It fills in the exact path for you.

  4. Open Alistair again. It will launch normally from then on.
