Both the left and right panel dividers show a directional chevron pill on hover, indicating which way the panel will move. Keyboard shortcut hints appear in the tooltip when you hover over each handle.

On macOS, Alistair downloads and installs new versions itself, then restarts on the newer build. The very first install still needs a one-time approval (right-click, Open), since that step needs a paid Apple developer certificate we have chosen not to buy. Every update after that first approval runs quietly in the background.

Insert a centred * * * break from the toolbar, or type --- and press Enter. Breaks carry through to the compiled manuscript. v1.2.4

Paragraphs are indented the way agents expect, except the first paragraph and the one after a scene break. The Compiler applies the same half-inch indents to PDF and DOCX. v1.2.4

Spell check is always on, and every Character, Location, Faction, Species, Religion, Magic System, and Lore name (plus aliases) is a known word, so invented names are never underlined. The dictionary follows the language you write in (English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian or Russian, with regional variants), set in Settings → Language. v1.2.5

Write on separate Letter pages, laid out the way the Compiler will print them: the chapter title's drop on page 1 and whole paragraphs carried to the next page. The bottom bar shows which page you're on; press Ctrl+G to go to a page. Prefer one long sheet? Turn it off in Settings. v1.2.4

Matches are highlighted using the CSS Custom Highlights API — purely visual, zero DOM mutation. Your formatting and undo stack are completely untouched.

Step through every match forward or backward, with a live count of results.

Detects contradictions in character attributes such as eye colour, hair colour, and age across scenes — flags inconsistencies so you can resolve them before they reach a reader.

Every issue card shows the actual sentence from your manuscript where the value was found — not just a scene name. Green entries confirm a consistent attribute; red entries show the conflicting values side by side with the surrounding text, so you can fix the right passage immediately.

Export selected documents as a .alistair-review file in two clicks. The bundle contains a read-only snapshot your reviewer opens in their own copy of Alistair.

Reviewers select text and add typed annotations categorized as Comment, Suggestion, or Question. All annotations are anchored to the exact text they reference.

The returned review opens on a summary: each reviewer's notes counted by kind, with one switch to take or skip all of theirs. Below it, notes are grouped by chapter with their suggested text and whether each still matches your current text. Nothing touches the manuscript until you choose. v1.2.5

Your open comments travel with the review file. Reviewers can reply to them, and the replies appear under the comment in your Comments panel. v1.2.5

Pick a run of chapters (Chapters 3 to 5) or Shift-click a range, and add front or back matter if you want it read too. v1.2.5

Handles text edits made since export. If you rewrote the annotated passage, the merger uses fuzzy matching to find the closest surviving anchor rather than marking it unresolvable.

Reviewers read freely — left-click and drag selects text naturally. Right-click on any passage opens the annotation popup for both selection comments and paragraph-level notes.

Reviewers can change the font family and size while reading — useful when reviewing manuscripts that were written in a different typeface. The setting is session-only and never written back to the bundle.

The entire workflow is file-based. Send the bundle by email or any file-sharing method you already use. Nothing touches a server at any point.

A heuristic tension score per scene derived from punctuation density and short-sentence ratio, plotted as a curve across your manuscript. Spot low-energy stretches at a glance.

Two dedicated buttons in the bottom sensory bar let you show character mentions, location mentions, or both — off by default so they never compete with your inline hint marks.

Brackets sit in the page margin and point back to the paragraph where a name appears, keeping your prose completely free of highlighting until you actually hover.

Hovering a bracket highlights every matching name in that paragraph using the CSS Custom Highlight API — purely visual, so it never touches your saved content or undo history.

Quotation marks (“…”, «…», „…“, »…«) and dash-style dialogue as in Russian, Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese novels, including the author's words between dashes (— Да, — сказала она. —) and incises inside guillemets (« Je viens, dit-il, demain. »).

Speech tags and pronouns in each language ("dijo ella", "dit-il", "sagte er", "disse lui"), and Russian's past tense, where "сказала" tells you a woman spoke even without a name. Used by the Dialogue panel and by read-aloud.

Importing a manuscript splits it on chapter headings in every supported language: Capítulo, Chapitre, Kapitel, Capitolo, Глава, and their Prologue, Part and Epilogue equivalents.

The spelling dictionary follows your language, using your computer's own dictionary for it. Suggested corrections are English-only for now.

Native voices for Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese. German and Russian voices are optional downloads in Settings → Text to Speech (126 MB and 278 MB) that work offline once installed.

In Manuscript, Alistair reads a scene the way a reader does: speech tags ("said Mara", "she said", "said I" in first-person books), the action next to a line ("She paused."), who the previous line spoke to by name, and turn-taking in a conversation. Lines it guessed are marked guessed, with the reason on hover. In Screenplay, the speaker is read straight from your Character/Dialogue elements. Each speaker gets a consistent colour so voice balance is easy to see. v1.2.5

Pick the right speaker for a line and the lines around it follow. Read-aloud uses the same speakers, so each character is read in their own voice. Clear choices forgets the speakers you picked in a scene. v1.2.5

Click a speaker's chip to dim every other line in the open editor and read just theirs — the rest of the page fades to a quarter opacity, same as Focus Mode. Click a different character to re-target directly, or the same one again to turn it off. Works in both Manuscript and Screenplay.

Show or hide the action and description paragraphs between spoken lines. Keep context visible when you need it, pure dialogue when you don't.

Click any dialogue card to jump directly to that line in the editor, with an orange flash highlight so you land exactly where you need to be.

Export to DOCX for editing or PDF for final distribution.

Each spread is its own document with a text panel for your prose and an illustration panel for reference images and notes. Spread number and page range are tracked per document.

Upload reference or draft images directly into each spread. Add staging notes (rough sketch, final art, approved) so the state of every illustration is always visible at a glance.

A live word count tracks every spread individually so you can keep each page appropriately concise for young readers.

The DOCX compiler assembles every spread with its text alongside dedicated pages for title, dedication, copyright, table of contents, acknowledgments, author bio, and a back cover blurb — all in a single submission-ready file.

Scene Heading, Action, Character, Parenthetical, Dialogue, and Transition are each set with a toolbar click or a Ctrl/Cmd+1–6 shortcut. Scene headings compose from separate INT./EXT., Location, and Time-of-Day fields instead of freeform typed punctuation.

Suggestions are pulled from the Character and Location sheets you've already created, plus anything already used elsewhere in the script — so a name you've planned shows up before you've ever typed it into a scene.

(V.O.), (O.S.), and (O.C.) combine with (CONT'D) on the same cue, matching how real scripts mark a character resuming off-screen after an interruption.

True per-page pagination with real page numbers, sequential scene numbers flanking each slug line in the margins, and (CONTINUED)/(MORE) markers when a scene or a line of dialogue splits across a page break.

Export to .fountain (plain-text) or .fdx (Final Draft XML), and import an existing .fountain file to seed a new document — or a whole new project, picking Screenplay in the Import wizard. Dual dialogue (the ^ marker), synopsis, and section lines all round-trip correctly instead of getting silently dropped.

Your saved templates are displayed in a visual card grid, each colour-coded by category — general, character, world, front matter, and visual document types. Animations and hover effects match the rest of the Alistair interface.

Once saved, custom templates appear alongside built-in templates when creating a new document. Use them across any folder in any project.

Write a template in HTML, CSS and JavaScript with a live preview beside it, and highlighting like VS Code: colours, line numbers, matching brackets and tags, auto-closing tags and Ctrl+/ to comment. "LLM Generate" can write the code from a description. v1.2.5

A freeform template's code can read your project through alistair: characters(), locations(), factions(), lore(), scenes() (in order, with who appears in each), stats(), search() and any document's text or fields. It can open documents, copy text, show a message, ask your local language model, and refresh itself when you save. Build a cast board, a scene tracker, a timeline or a name generator in a few lines. The builder's API tab lists every call with an example to insert and a Try it button that runs it on your project. Full reference: Template API. v1.2.5

With no code, a template can list characters, places or scenes (filtered, sorted, as cards or a table, or only the ones that link to this document), look up a detail through a link, count and total, find every scene that mentions the document, work out numbers with a formula, show fields only when they matter, and add buttons that make new documents. Make a code copy to take one further in HTML, CSS and JavaScript. v1.2.5

A template reads freely, but before it makes a document or changes a field or a status, Alistair asks: Allow, Always allow this template, or Don't allow. Every change shows a message with Undo, and Template Manager shows which templates may change your project without asking. v1.2.5

Give any document its own icon and colour, or your own picture, kept in the project and shown in the folder menu, tiles and Recents. Image fields keep a picture cropped to the shape you choose, with a caption; File fields attach documents, sound or video. v1.2.5

Every save keeps the version it replaced, to look at and restore, and Template Manager shows each template as a small picture of itself. v1.2.5

Indexes your actual manuscript text so responses reference your real characters, locations, and story content. If the answer is not in your manuscript, it says so. It never invents details.

Ask about "Chapter 1" or any scene by name and it retrieves that specific chapter's content directly. Not just semantically similar passages, but that exact document.

Responses include clickable scene reference cards with real text excerpts pulled directly from your manuscript. Click any source card to open that scene in the editor.

Talk through your magic system, factions, places and history. Alistair asks the questions that uncover what you haven't decided yet, points out gaps and contradictions, and lays out options for you to choose from and develop.

Ask how published authors handle point of view, pacing or dialogue. Turn on Practice for a short exercise, then paste your attempt for specific feedback, or Questions to be asked rather than told.

Ask for a scene, a description or a rewrite and it writes one, in your style when a style profile exists. Draft returns paste-ready prose instead of advice; Dialogue returns spoken lines only.

If no project is open when you ask a story question, Alistair lists your available projects as clickable options and re-asks your question once you select one.

Responses stream token-by-token via SSE — the first token appears in roughly 1–2 seconds instead of waiting for the full response to buffer. v1.1

Ask about an event and the character answers from the manuscript passages that mention them. Name a place, faction or piece of lore and they know what it is. Nothing they say contradicts what you wrote.

Getting to know them, their past, how they talk, a relationship with another character, a scene they were in, or being questioned by another character. Suggested questions change with the focus.

Play one character while Alistair plays the other, one short line at a time, to hear how they'd react before you write the scene. You speak for your character; Alistair speaks only for theirs.

Keep an interview as a note linked to the character. It's searchable, and the character stays consistent with what they said in it the next time you talk.

Typing "interview [character name]" in the LLM chat opens the real interview, so the model never fakes a session with your characters.

Suggestions appear as highlighted text directly in your document with easy-to-use action buttons for each recommendation.

Each suggestion includes three options: Accept to apply the change, Dismiss to remove it, or Discuss to open a conversation about the recommendation.

Get grammar corrections, style improvements, and "show don't tell" recommendations to refine every aspect of your writing.

Review all suggestions in the Comments panel. Click any suggestion to navigate directly to it in your document.

Drag and drop .gguf model files into Alistair, or download compatible models directly from within the app.

Your LLM runs directly on your hardware via llama.cpp. All processing happens on-device - no data leaves your machine.

American and British English voices, plus Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese ones that pronounce their own language natively. Alistair reads each scene in its language and gives characters voices that match their language and gender. All voices run locally via the bundled ONNX engine — no internet or API key required. German and Russian voices are optional downloads in Settings → Text to Speech. v1.2.5

Mix any two voices at a custom ratio to craft a sound unique to your project. Named blends (Alistair Female, Alistair Male) ship ready to use. Save your own blends for reuse across sessions.

Play, pause, stop, seek, skip forward and back by chunk, and adjust playback speed from 0.5× to 2.0×. A seek bar with timestamps keeps you oriented in long documents.

Right-click any selected text in the scene editor and choose Read Aloud to send it directly to the TTS player. Great for spot-checking dialogue or a specific paragraph.

Export your entire document as a single WAV audio file. Recordings are saved to a configurable local folder (default: your Alistair data folder) and never uploaded anywhere.

TTS inference automatically uses your NVIDIA GPU via CUDA when available, falling back to CPU seamlessly. Engine status and hardware info are shown in Settings.

Assign a named voice (built-in blend or Custom Voice Profile) to any character in your project. When reading aloud, the TTS engine automatically switches to that character's voice each time their dialogue appears — bringing your cast to life without manual intervention. Assignments are set in the Dialogue-Only panel and persist with the project.

Clone any voice from a short audio sample (as little as 10 seconds). Record directly in the app or import a WAV/MP3 file. Alistair extracts a voice profile instantly — no training pipeline, no cloud upload, no waiting. The GPU Package enables faster inference; CPU works out of the box.

Save any cloned voice as a named Custom Voice Profile (e.g. "Elara_Cloned", "Crane_Deep"). Profiles appear alongside built-in voices everywhere in the TTS UI — in the voice picker, blend controls, and character assignment dropdowns. Test a profile before saving with the built-in preview player.
