Acceptance of Terms

These Terms of Service ("Terms") constitute a legally binding agreement between you ("You" or "Your") and the publisher of Alistair ("Licensor," "we," "us," or "our") governing your use of the Alistair creative writing software ("Software"), including all associated media, documentation, and future updates.

By installing, downloading, accessing, or using the Software, you confirm that you are at least 18 years of age (or the age of majority in your jurisdiction), have read and understood these Terms, and agree to be bound by them. If you are using the Software on behalf of an organisation, you represent that you have authority to bind that organisation to these Terms.

License Grant

Subject to these Terms, we grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to install and use one (1) copy of the Software on a single computer or device for your personal or internal business purposes.

The Software is licensed, not sold. We retain all right, title, and interest in and to the Software, including all intellectual property rights. These Terms do not grant you any rights to our trademarks, service marks, or trade names.

Restrictions

You may not, and may not permit anyone else to:

• Modify, translate, reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, or create derivative works based on the Software;
• Copy the Software, except for one backup copy for archival purposes;
• Rent, lease, loan, sublicense, or transfer the Software or your license to any third party;
• Remove, alter, or obscure any proprietary notices on the Software;
• Use the Software for any illegal purpose or in violation of any applicable law or regulation;
• Redistribute, resell, or publicly distribute the Software or any portion thereof;
• Use the Software to develop a competing product or service;
• Circumvent, disable, or tamper with any license key, copy protection, or access control mechanism.

Language Model Features

Alistair includes optional language model and machine learning features that may generate text, suggestions, or other content ("Model-Generated Content"). By using these features, you acknowledge the following:

• Accuracy not guaranteed. Model-Generated Content is provided "as-is" and may contain errors, inaccuracies, or misleading information. We make no representations regarding its reliability or completeness.
• Not professional advice. Model-Generated Content does not constitute legal, medical, financial, or any other professional advice.
• Verification required. You are solely responsible for reviewing and validating all Model-Generated Content before use, publication, or distribution.
• Intellectual property. You retain ownership of original content you create. Ownership of Model-Generated Content is subject to applicable law, and you are responsible for ensuring its use complies with intellectual property rights.
• Bias. Language models may produce content that is biased, inappropriate, or offensive. We do not endorse and are not responsible for such content.
• Local processing. All model inference runs locally on your device. No manuscript text is transmitted to external servers for model processing.
• Third-party models. Language model features require a compatible GGUF model file, which you download independently from Hugging Face. Alistair provides a direct link to browse available models. Each model is subject to its own license as specified by the provider — you are responsible for reviewing and complying with those terms. We are not affiliated with Hugging Face or any model provider.
• Custom models. If you import your own GGUF model files, you do so entirely at your own risk. We make no representations regarding the safety, accuracy, or legality of custom model outputs.

Voice Cloning

Alistair includes an optional voice cloning feature that generates synthetic speech from an audio sample you provide. By using this feature, you additionally acknowledge and agree to the following:

• Consent. You are solely responsible for obtaining all necessary consents before recording or importing any person's voice. Recording consent laws vary by jurisdiction — in many regions, recording a person's voice without their knowledge or consent is illegal. You must not use this feature with audio you do not have the right to use.
• No impersonation. You must not use voice cloning to impersonate, defame, defraud, harass, or deceive any real person, or to produce content that could mislead a listener into believing they are hearing an authentic recording of a real individual without that individual's authorization.
• Your liability. You are solely and entirely responsible for all audio you record, import, clone, and output using this feature. We expressly disclaim all liability for any claim, loss, or damage arising from your use of cloned voices, including claims relating to intellectual property, privacy, defamation, fraud, or any applicable law governing synthetic or manipulated audio.
• Local processing. All voice cloning inference runs entirely on your device. Audio samples, voice profiles, and synthesized output are never transmitted to our servers or any third party by Alistair.
• No warranty on output. Cloned voice output is provided "as-is." We make no representations regarding its accuracy, quality, or fitness for any particular purpose.

Your Content

You retain all rights to content you create using Alistair, including manuscripts, documents, notes, and other creative works. We claim no ownership of your content.

You are solely responsible for backing up your content. We are not liable for any loss of data or creative works. We strongly recommend maintaining regular backups.

Trial Version

Alistair is available as a free 30-day trial. During the trial period, you may use the full feature set of the Software at no charge. Upon expiration of the trial, you must either purchase a license key or cease using the Software.

We reserve the right to modify trial terms or duration at any time with notice.

License Key & Activation

A valid license key is required to continue using Alistair after the trial period. Your license key is tied to a single machine and may not be transferred to another device without our written authorisation.

You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your license key. We reserve the right to deactivate license keys obtained through fraudulent means, chargebacks, or in violation of these Terms.

Automatic Updates

The Software may automatically download and install updates, patches, and feature additions to improve performance, security, or functionality. By using the Software, you consent to automatic updates.

You may disable automatic updates in the Software settings. Doing so may limit functionality or expose your system to security vulnerabilities. We are not liable for issues arising from your choice to disable updates.

Third-Party Components

Alistair offers optional features that require third-party components not included in the base installation:

• NVIDIA GPU Package (optional). A separate download for NVIDIA graphics cards. It contains NVIDIA CUDA runtime, cuBLAS, cuFFT and cuDNN libraries (subject to NVIDIA's license agreements), llama.cpp CUDA binaries (MIT License), ONNX Runtime GPU providers (MIT License) for text to speech, and PyTorch (BSD-style license) for voice cloning. We are not affiliated with NVIDIA Corporation.
• GPU Engine for AMD and Intel Graphics (optional). A separate download containing llama.cpp binaries built with Vulkan support (MIT License). It uses the Vulkan driver that comes with your graphics driver; no driver is included. We are not affiliated with Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., Intel Corporation, or The Khronos Group.
• Language Models (optional). Alistair provides a link to Hugging Face where you can browse and download compatible GGUF model files of your choosing. No model is bundled with or distributed by Alistair. Each model you download is subject to its own third-party license as specified by the model's provider on Hugging Face. You are solely responsible for reviewing and complying with those license terms. We are not affiliated with Hugging Face or any model provider.
• Voice Packs (optional). German and Russian read-aloud voices are separate downloads from our website, offered in Settings → Text to Speech. Each pack includes its license and credits. See "Third-Party Voice Models" below.

Third-Party Voice Models

The voice packs are speech models made by others, which we have compressed to 8-bit and otherwise left unchanged. We redistribute them under their own licenses, and those licenses, not these Terms, govern the models themselves.

• German (Kerstin). A German fine-tune of Kokoro-82M by crane-local-ai, licensed under the Apache License 2.0, based on hexgrad/Kokoro-82M (Apache License 2.0) and trained on the Kerstin dataset (CC0 1.0).
• Russian (Sveta, Masha, Dima). kokoro-ru by zaakirio, a Russian fine-tune of hexgrad/Kokoro-82M, released under an OpenRAIL license. Its Russian text processing is adapted from the kokoro-ru project (Apache License 2.0). Before downloading, Alistair asks you to accept the use restrictions below.

The Russian voices' license requires everyone who uses them, or anything derived from them, to follow these use restrictions, and requires us to pass them on to you. By downloading the Russian voices you agree not to use them, or audio made with them:

• in any way that violates any applicable national, federal, state, local or international law or regulation;
• for the purpose of exploiting, harming or attempting to exploit or harm minors in any way;
• to generate or disseminate verifiably false information and/or content with the purpose of harming others;
• to generate or disseminate personal identifiable information that can be used to harm an individual;
• to defame, disparage or otherwise harass others;
• to impersonate a real person, or to present generated speech as an authentic recording of a real person;
• for fully automated decision making that adversely impacts an individual's legal rights or otherwise creates or modifies a binding, enforceable obligation;
• for any use intended to or which has the effect of discriminating against or harming individuals or groups based on online or offline social behavior or known or predicted personal or personality characteristics;
• to exploit any of the vulnerabilities of a specific group of persons based on their age, social, physical or mental characteristics, in order to materially distort the behavior of a person pertaining to that group in a manner that causes or is likely to cause that person or another person physical or psychological harm;
• for any use intended to or which has the effect of discriminating against individuals or groups based on legally protected characteristics or categories;
• to provide medical advice and medical results interpretation;
• to generate or disseminate information for the purpose to be used for administration of justice, law enforcement, immigration or asylum processes, such as predicting an individual will commit fraud/crime commitment.

If you share audio made with the Russian voices, or share the model, these restrictions pass on to those you share it with. The voice models are provided "as is", without warranties of any kind, and you are accountable for the audio you generate and how it is used. The full license text comes with each pack in LICENSE.txt.

Disclaimer of Warranties

THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.

We do not warrant that the Software will meet your requirements, that it will operate uninterrupted or error-free, or that defects will be corrected.

Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, WE SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, INDIRECT, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES WHATSOEVER, INCLUDING DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF BUSINESS PROFITS, LOSS OF DATA, LOSS OF CREATIVE WORKS, OR ANY OTHER PECUNIARY LOSS.

In any event, our total liability under these Terms shall not exceed the amount actually paid by you for your Alistair license.

Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Alistair and its owner from and against any claims, damages, losses, liabilities, costs, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising from your use of the Software, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of any third-party rights.

Termination

These Terms are effective until terminated. Your rights will terminate automatically and without notice if you fail to comply with any provision. Upon termination, you must destroy all copies of the Software in your possession.

We may terminate these Terms immediately if you breach any provision. Sections 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, and 14 shall survive termination.

Governing Law

These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Florida, United States, without regard to its conflict of law provisions.

Any legal action or proceeding arising under these Terms shall be brought exclusively in the state or federal courts located in Florida, and you consent to personal jurisdiction of such courts.

Changes to Terms

We reserve the right to modify these Terms at any time. We will make reasonable efforts to notify users of material changes. Continued use of the Software after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the revised Terms.

We recommend checking this page periodically. The "Last Updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
